Solo Project 5 was an editing assignment for Carnegie Mellon University’s Visual Story course, intended to teach the basics of Adobe Premiere Pro.

We were given the choice between several sets of clips intended for different levels of experience in video editing. TN Parkour was intended for absolute beginners in editing, Strangers at the Door was for those wanting more storytelling elements in their final video, and Unleashed was a visual effects-heavy set of clips for those wanting to further explore Adobe After Effects. I chose the scariest set of clips with Anesthesia, intended for those with some experience in editing, but wanting to explore storytelling more than visual effects.

I was heavily inspired by the song “The Alien” by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow for the film Annihilation. I was not convinced by any of the actor’s performances in any of the clips, but I loved each clip’s aesthetic and color palette. I decided to take a crack at playing with synthesizers, and, with the help of a friend, was able to create an original piece in Logic Pro X for the project. I later revisited the project to create Solo Project 5 version 2, which is set directly to “The Alien” from Annihilation.
